Kentucky State Parks are offering a weekday camping deal through May to allow campers to pay for one night and get the second night free Sunday through Thursday. Court Appointed Special Advocates of United Way in Calloway County is actively seeking volunteers so that children who have been abandoned, neglected, or abused can have an adult voice in court. The program includes training which requires participants to become familiar with courtroom procedures and circumstances of assigned cases so that evaluation and recommendations that are in the best interest of the child can be made in court until a permanent plan for the child is created. Those interested in becoming a volunteer must be at least 21 years old and pass a background check. Thirty hours of training will follow approval. As part of the Evenings Upstairs series, McCracken County Public Library in Paducah is hosting “Quilt Art: Examining the Narrative in Kentucky Quilts” Thursday, April 24, at 7:00 p.m. The program will be presented by Pearlie Johnson of the University of Louisville. Johnson is conducting a research project on African American quilters and their quilts. She will be interviewing quilters and family members in Paducah and throughout Kentucky. The Humane Society of Calloway County and Murray State University’s Animal Health Technology Club are hosting their annual Pet ID Day on Saturday, April 26, from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Carman Animal Health Building on College Farm Road in Murray. Pets must have proof of current rabies vaccination to participate. Physical exams for dogs and cats are free, heartworm tests are available for $15, and feline leukemia and immunodeficiency tests will be available for $20. Lourdes Hospital is holding a training session for anyone interested in becoming a hospice volunteer on Monday May 20 and Tuesday, May 21, from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Lourdes North Plaza. After completing training, volunteers provide an array of services, such as a respite for the caregiver, playing soft music, or reading an inspirational story to a patient.
